ANAESTHETIC AWARENESS COMPENSATION CLAIM

Anaesthetic awareness occurs in about one per cent of patients in the UK, where they may recall the operation. and of these people 10 per cent may have even felt intense pain. Women undergoing an emergency caesarean section seem to have the highest incidence rate of recall. You may be eligible for compensation if your anaesthetist was found to be negligent in failing to assure your medical welfare.

Some incidents of anaesthetic awareness can be very traumatic, where intense pain was felt during the operation and psychological disturbances occur later on. Common side effects and sensations from inadequate anaesthesia include: pain from skin incisions; distress during the operation due to temporary paralysis while being awake but not being able to signal so; psychological problems later, including nightmares, depression and panic attacks, and so on. If Medical Negligence is proven, claims can be substantial for those with ongoing problems.

Many people are resilient to anaesthetics and steps can be taken to minimize these cases, such as thoroughly checking the patient’s medical history and administering adequate pre-medication. A case of medical negligence where anaesthetic awareness is concerned is overwhelmingly down to faulty technique, followed by more human error due to faulty, unchecked or malfunctioning equipment. Administering the wrong drug is less common.

If you had anaesthetic awareness during an operation and felt pain or are having psychological problems as a result, you should discuss this with a solicitor with a view to making a claim against the anaesthetist and the relevant healthcare authority.
