Erectile dysfunction is also known as impotence and is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection for sexual activity. Every man will have problems maintaining an erection every once in a while but if it becomes a habitual occurrence it is called impotence or erectile dysfunction.
Sometimes treating erectile dysfunction involves the treating of an underlying condition and other times it involves actually treating the dysfunction itself. Fortunately, there are many new treatments for erectile dysfunction that have helped millions of men with the problem.
Symptoms of erectile dysfunction include the inability to get an erection at all, an inability to maintain that erection and a reduced sexual desire. It's important to note that the erectile process is a complex one that involves the nerves, blood vessels, muscles, hormones, brain and emotions. A dysfunction in any one of these areas can cause an erectile dysfunction which can be as simple as being stressed out or as complex as vascular insufficiency and hormonal imbalance.
There are physical and emotional causes of erectile dysfunction. Common physical causes include having heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, atherosclerosis, obesity, low testosterone, Parkinson's disease, metabolic syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Peyronie's disease, prescriptions that interfere with erections, tobacco use, certain pelvic surgeries including prostate surgery and alcohol use to excess.
The psychological causes of erectile dysfunction include things that interfere with the emotional-physical bond in the creation of an erection. Stress, fatigue, depression, anxiety and other diseases of mental health or stress can cause you to struggle to have an erection. Erections are harder to come by as you age and there may need to be more stimulation in order to have an erection.
Risk factors for erectile dysfunction include having heart disease or diabetes, using tobacco products, having had radiation or surgery for prostate cancer, being overweight, having injuries to the nerves that control erections and being on medications like antidepressants, high blood pressure medications and antihistamines, which interfere with the onset of an erection or the maintenance of an erection. Psychological conditions predispose you to having erectile dysfunction can inhibit erections as can alcohol and drug use. Prolonged bicycle use can compress the nerves that affect having an erection.
Tests for determining whether or not there is erectile dysfunction include doing a complete exam to look for other signs of atherosclerosis, blood tests for testosterone level , doing an ultrasound to check for blood flow through the penis and doing a simple overnight test for erections which involves wrapping a tape around the base of the penis and seeing if a nocturnal erection occurs, which would break the tape. If the tape breaks, it is usually a psychological problem.
You can treat erectile dysfunction using medications that help maintain the blood within the penis so a firm erection is obtained and maintained. This includes Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. All are approved for men with erectile dysfunction and some are used for female sexual dysfunction, although they are not approved for that. The medications all enhance the ability of nitric oxide to work in the penile blood flow so that the erection is made possible. You need to expect that it might not work the first time and that it may take an adjustment in dosage before it can actually work.
You need your doctor's approval in order to take these medications or herbal medications for erectile dysfunction. You need to consider not taking these medications if you are also taking nitrate medications like nitroglycerin for heart disease, have heart disease or angina, have had a stroke or have very low blood pressure or uncontrolled diabetes. High blood pressure can also be a contraindication for taking erectile dysfunction medications.
There are other ways to control erectile dysfunction including injecting yourself with alprostadil. This is an injectable medication that is injected at the base of the penis that stimulates an injection that lasts up to an hour. You can use alprostadil as a penile suppository that also stimulates an erection. Testosterone replacement therapy can resume erections in men who have a low testosterone syndrome.
There are also penile pumps and penile implants that can create an adequate erection. Rarely, blood vessel surgery can be done to correct a leaking penile vessel that is inhibiting penile function. Psychological counseling can improve stress, depression and anxiety so that erections can begin again.
