Thousands of clinical compensation claims are initiated every year in the United Kingdom by medical negligence solicitors on behalf of people from all walks of life. A multitude of operations and procedures are executed successfully however a small percentage do go wrong, laying the grounds for medical negligence solicitors to take legal action in order to claim compensation. In today's age, people of all socioeconomic groups are striving to set back the clock through the use of facial cosmetic surgery, also called "plastic surgery". There are several types of facial plastic surgery that are done to smooth out wrinkles and lift baggy skin. In fact, there are about 12.5 million plastic surgeries done every year in the US.
Eye Lift
An eye lift or blepharoplasty is a procedure done to remove the wrinkles in the upper and lower part of the eye. Eye lifts can be done alone or can be done in tandem with a brow lift to make the entire upper face wrinkle free and younger looking. The eye lift is sometimes done for medical reasons rather than just cosmetic reasons. This occurs when the eyelid slips down over the eye itself and obstructs the vision. Insurance will pay for this kind of problem but not if the surgery is done for purely cosmetic reasons.
The procedure is done by making a cut in the upper lid at the area where there is a natural crease. The skin is separated from the underlying tissue and excess fat is removed along with tightening of the lax muscles. The skin is redraped over the eye and excess skin is removed. Sutures are placed and the eye is wrinkle free. The lower lid is done in a similar fashion, with the exception of the fact that the incision is made near the eyelash line.
Brow Lift
A brow lift is often done at the same time as a blepharoplasty. It is a procedure used to get rid of horizontal wrinkling of the forehead. Frown lines are improved. The procedure is done by making an incision in the hairline across the top of the forehead. The skin is separated from the underlying tissue and excess fat is removed in order to make the forehead smooth. Muscles are tightened and the skin is redraped over the forehead. Sutures are placed that are then removed within 10 days of the original procedure. The forehead now looks smoothed and younger.
Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty is extremely common and involves "fixing" the nose. The nose can be shortened and bumps can be removed. The septum, if not in place, can be broken and realigned into its proper position. There can be implants used to change the shape of the nose.
The procedure often involves an incision within the mouth underneath the upper lip. The nose is then treated to make it look the way the patient wants it to look and absorbable sutures are placed to close the lip incision.
Rhytidectomy
A rhytidectomy is also called a face lift. It works for the cheeks and the lower face but it doesn't work as well for the upper face. A brow lift needs to be done in order for you to have total facial coverage. In a rhytidectomy, an incision is made along the hairline in the temple and down in front of the ears to the lower aspect of the ears. The skin is separated from the facial tissue and the muscles of the face are tightened. Fat can be removed or fat can be added in a procedure called a fat transfer. It all depends on the shape of the face desired and whether or not there are hollow areas of the face or places in the face that have too much fat.
The procedure is completed by redraping the skin and trimming off excess skin. A long incision is closed with sutures that are removed about a week to 10 days later. The side effects are numbness, excessive bleeding, infection and swelling of the face. Most are treatable or self limiting and the end result is a face that looks much younger than it did before the procedure.
Nonsurgical Methods
There are a number of nonsurgical methods to use on the face in place of invasive surgery. These can include laser skin therapy that smoothes the skin and makes it look younger. Small wrinkles can be treated with Botox, which lasts about 4-6 months and which can be injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is another abrasive procedure that gets rid of small wrinkles in the skin and smoothes the overall look of the skin.
