LUNG CANCER - MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE
Lung cancer is believed to cause more deaths throughout the world than any other form of cancer. Much of the blame can be attributed to tobacco however other factors that are considered to contribute to the cause of lung cancer include environmental exposure to chemicals and fibres - these substances excluding tobacco are linked to 15,000 fatalities from lung cancer in Europe.

Genetic Factors?
Research shows that some people have a genetic predisposition to lung cancer - one proof of this is that not all heavy smokers develop lung cancer. Genetic factors can either safeguard the individual or make him susceptible to developing lung cancer.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis depends on various tests which include the personal medical history of the patient, a complete medical examination, chest x-rays, CAT scans, CT scans, bone scans, PET scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, sputum cytology tests, bronschoscopies, thoracentesis tests, blood tests and needle biopsies.

Metastasis
Early diagnosis is generally deemed necessary for lung cancer treatment to be successful. The earlier lung cancer is perceived by the doctor, then the corresponding treatment will be less radical, less invasive and generally more simple. Delaying treatment can mean that lung cancer will spread to other body tissues and organs, thus complicating treatment and further diagnosis. The medical term metastasise refers to the process where cancer spreads to other body tissues and organs. The body tissues and organs that are usually affected are: the other lung, the pericardium, adrenal glands, liver, brain and the bones.

Mis-diagnosis & False Positive
Whilst diagnostic techniques are constantly improving, sometimes patients are mis-diagnosed with lung cancer. The patient might undergo unnecessary treatment that can cause significant discomfort including high risk treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. And of course the patient might have to suffer financial losses and emotional distress if he has been mis-diagnosed with lung cancer.
