MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE COMPENSATION CLAIMS
The oesophagus is the tube that connects the throat to the stomach. One way to detect oesophageal cancer in its earliest stages is to recognise the common symptoms and risk factors of the disease. A doctors failure to recognise these indicators may be considered to be esophageal cancer medical negligence. Signs that a patient may have esophageal cancer include :-
- painful or difficult swallowing
- hoarseness
- chronic coughing
- coughing up blood
- vomiting
- severe weight loss
- pain in the throat, back, between the shoulder blades or behind the breastbone

Diagnosis
Diagnosing esophageal cancer involves consideration of the patient's medical history as well performing certain medical tests. One such test is the barium swallow. With a barium swallow, the patient first drinks liquid containing barium, which is a radio opaque substance. A series of x-rays is then taken.
A second common test is the esophagoscopy. An esophagoscopy involves examining the patient's esophagus with a thin, lighted tube. Tissue samples can also be collected during an esophagoscopy for further testing.

Risk Factors
The causes of esophageal cancer remain unknown, but doctors can screen for the illness when well-known risk factors are present. Factors known to increase a patient's chances of developing esophageal cancer include :-
- being male
- being over the age of 60
- smoking cigarettes
- heavy or chronic use of alcohol
- a history of head and neck cancer
- long-term irritation of the esophagus
- having a hiatus hernia
- working in a profession that puts you in frequent contact with metal dust

Take Legal Advice
One reason why esophageal cancer is particularly devastating is that it often reaches advanced stages before it is detected. Advances in oncology and medicine, however, have made it possible for physicians to prevent, treat and sometimes cure esophageal cancer. Even if the cancer cannot be cured, it is now possible to greatly improve the quality of the patient's life and eliminate much of their pain and suffering. The key to effective treatment, of course, is early diagnosis. If you or someone you love has been the victim of esophageal cancer medical negligence you should contact a specialist lawyer as soon as possible. There are time limits and delay can terminate an otherwise potentially successful compensation claim.
