UK MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE LAW INFORMATION

General Surgery

Undergoing a surgical procedure, no matter how elementary always has its risks and complications. More than fifty percent of all medical negligence complaints stem from careless surgery. The most obvious examples of surgical misdemeanors include leaving surgical instruments in the body cavity and accidental severing of vital blood vessels and nerves.

Laparoscopy - Keyhole Surgery

Laparoscopy is a less invasive procedure compared to open surgery and has become a popular choice in the UK. Laparoscopy is a precise procedure requiring extensive training and adherence to well established protocols. What patients often do not understand and are frequently not advised about is that it is more risky to undergo laparascopy than open surgery. Laparoscopy involves at least two incisions however the first one is carried out blind where the surgeon does not know what is present underneath the skin and this is the time where most errors are made. Nerves and blood vessels may be severed or vital organs may be punctured as the first incision is made to facilitate the initial insertion of instruments.
